Perhaps the only thing wrong with this 1989 bright red XJS convertible with magnolia hide interior is that has silencers; and efficient ones at that. Get rid of them: if you've got it, flaunt it. This is not a car for the shy and retiring!

A11 MGO has just over 92,000 miles showing on the clock and there is a photocopy of the service history from 1989 until 1996 so this is more than likely correct. Forming part of a private collection since 2006, it has only covered 1,700 miles in the last 11 years.

It is a good, clean car with a few age-related marks but in surprisingly original condition; lift the carpets and the floor-pan is still bright shiny red - paint not rust. The magnolia hide, with its contrasting piping, is clean and unmarked and the electric hood is both undamaged and efficient, raising promptly when our photo shoot was interrupted by a sudden British downpour! Running nicely as we moved it around for the pictures, it has an MOT until May with no advisories recorded.

The XJS has been in the shadow of the E-Type for a long time, but people are beginning to realise how good the car is in the real world and what a bargain it is, and even how practical it is, compared to its vastly more expensive predecessor. Practical, V12, bright red: what more could you ask for?

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
